ECOLAIRE continues to pioneer in the condenser market by offering
reliable solutions as cycle requirements evolve. In many combined
cycle, cogeneration and refuse-recovery plants there is a requirement
to operate the boiler while simultaneously performing maintenance
on the steam turbine.
Traditionally
this has been accomplished with a separate dump condenser. The
method is costly in both equipment and space and can be fraught
with control and operational problems.
ECOLAIRE
has developed a zero-leakage turbine isolation damper that will
allow the main condenser to accept the steam from the operating
boiler, thus eliminating the dump condenser and attendant systems.
The isolation damper is located in the condenser extension neck
and with automatic operation allows complete isolation typically
within 10 minutes or less.

This
10'2" diameter damper will isolate a 60 MW turbine
from a 35,945 square-foot condenser in a combined cycle
cogeneration facility. The damper is fabricated as a
separate unit for installation within the extension
neck of this axial exhaust turbine. The damper is fully
automated and has been factory assembled and tested
for zero leakage and minus 15 psi differential. |

The Steam Turbine Isolation Damper can also be utilized in peak
load applications when process steam is required while the steam
turbine is off-line. The isolation damper maintains vacuum in the
condenser during overnight shutdown providing the following benefits: |
- conservation
of auxillary boiler steam strictly for process steam supply
(eliminates need for steam supply to the steam turbine gland
seals)
- eliminates
the need to operate condensate and circulating water systems
on overnight shutdown
- ancillary
equipment for gland steam conditioning can be eliminated
- improves
performance margin on auxillary boilers - reduces overall plant
power consumption

This
6,575 square-foot condenser serves a 15 MW turbine in a combined
cycle facility. The shell is oversized to dissipate the thermal
and kinetic energy of the steam dump. The 9'2" x 2'5" isolation
damper is integral within the top of the shell. |
